| ELDERS: The Bible uses the terms "overseer" and "elder" interchangeably, and thus refer to one office. The responsibility of the church's welfare is given to these men. It should be noted that this office is a plurality of men in the same church Acts 20:28; Titus 1:5-7; Philippians 1:1. The Bible says they are to:
- Care for God's people 1 Peter 5:2; - Be engaged in public teaching - Manage God's church and rule well - Be examples to the flock 1 Peter 5:3. - Stand up for the Truth Titus 1:9 and confront false doctrine Titus 1:11. - Visit those in need James 1:27, and protect the flock of God Acts 20:29-31.
DEACONS and DEACONESSES: Within the church, they are the ones who are active in service to others. The church recognizes those within its own body who have the qualities outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-12 and adorn them with the title of "deacon" or "deconess" so that both the congregation and the leadership can acknowledge them and their work. |
